Why Owning a Vacation Home Can Benefit Your Health

Some people think owning a vacation home is a luxury. But owning a vacation home in Orlando can be an excellent financial investment, and it may be just what the doctor ordered.

More than half of American workers (55%) left vacation days unused in 2015, according to a study released by the U.S. Travel Association’s Project Time Off. And most of those who do take time off for vacation aren’t taking a total break.  A Glassdoor-Harris Interactive survey found that 61 percent of Americans work while on vacation, despite complaints from family members.

Vacations Reduce Stress, Improve Mental Health

This is a big problem because employees who don't take time off are less productive. You are at risk of suffering from mental fatigue, which is just as real as physical fatigue. An Oxford Economics study reported that three-quarters of workers surveyed said they felt recharged after a vacation, half felt more focused, and 41% said they were less stressed.

Health care providers say vacations boost the mental and physical health of the entire family. Studies have shown that vacations contribute to more positive emotions and fewer negative feelings and depression. They have also shown that vacations lasting more than two weeks cause people to feel less tense and healthier, with higher energy levels and more life satisfaction.

Good for Your Heart

Annual vacations have also been linked to a decrease in heart disease. An American Medical Association study found that men who take frequent annual vacations were 32 percent less likely to die from heart disease than those who did not go on vacation. Holidays benefit women too. A 20-year study found that women who took vacation once every 6 years or less were almost 8 times more likely to develop coronary heart disease or have a heart attack than women who took at least two vacations per year.

Improves Personal Relationships

Women who take vacations a least twice a year were found to be more satisfied with their marriages, and the odds of marital satisfaction decreased as the frequency of vacations decreased. What’s more, families who vacation together have been found to undergo shared experience, communication and togetherness, escape and relaxation and experiential learning, which all contribute positively to well-being and to relationships.

Taking more than one vacation a year can get start to get expensive when you factor in food and lodging costs. That’s why owning a vacation home can be a cost-effective solution. There are tax benefits available with a second home, and the opportunity for rental income. Staying in a home with a full kitchen means you can save money on eating out too.
